Population

The Sioux Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 124,088 in 1970 to 228,780 in 2010. That was an increase of 84.4 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 2,200 in 1970 to 12,181 in 2010. That was an increase of 453.7 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 1.8 percent to 5.3 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 77.7 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Domestic migration (NDM) was the primary factor adding population in the first two periods, replaced by B-D in the latest period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, the same relationships in adding population continued.
